Design Changes
The Old and Flawed Design

Heat Bent Construction:
-
Heat bent acrylic reduces the options for the design of a part and requires more glue to hold together which makes it less eco-friendly.
Material Choice:
-
The part was constructed out of acrylic, and is easy to crack and split along sharp corners.
-
Acrylic is not very eco-friendly as it is not biodegradable and is made from Fossil-Fuels.
-
Acrylic is recyclable however, it is much harder than other plastics to recycle meaning most ends up in Landfill.
Flimsy Design:
-
The backing of the part was not supported on the sides and as such has a tendency to droop and warp above 27°C or 60% humidity which is common in the UK.
Our New and Improved Design

3D Printed Construction:
-
The part is constructed out of 3D Printed PLA allowing for greater rigidity due to the internal lattice structure inside the part.
Material Choice:
-
PLA has a glass transition temperature of 60°C meaning it needs to get that hot to deform or warp.
-
PLA is also Eco-Friendly as it decomposes when composted and is made from Corn Starch rather than Fossil Fuels.
-
PLA is easily recyclable and when recycled it can be turned right back into 3D Printer Filament.
Improved Design:
-
the curved sides and increased support for the back reduce the chance of the part cracking and increases durability in a work environment.
